• A forward, Gazzaev scored four goals in eight games for the Soviet Union, won the 1984 USSR Cup with Dinamo Moskva and – having played for his local side under their former name, Spartak Ordzhonikidze – coached Alania Vladikavkaz to the 1995 Russian title.

• Joined CSKA in 2001, winning the 2002 Russian Cup but missing out on the league in a play-off against FC Lokomotiv Moskva. Undeterred, his side romped to the title in 2003.

• Led CSKA and Russia in tandem in 2002 and 2003, resigning as national team boss after UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying defeats by Albania and Georgia.

• Returning to CSKA in 2004 after a break from football, he won the 2005 Russian Cup, the 2005 and 2006 Premier-Liga titles and masterminded Russia's first UEFA club competition triumph as CSKA beat Sporting Clube de Portugal 3-1 in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup final in Lisbon.

• Replaced Yuri Semin as Dynamo coach in summer 2009 after resigning as CSKA boss at the end of 2008.
