Guarantees given on UEFA EURO 2012 security

UEFA has received a clear assurance from the governments of the UEFA EURO 2012 host nations that all necessary steps are being taken to guarantee the safety of visitors.

The EURO Steering Group, comprising representatives of the governments of Poland and Ukraine, representatives of the national agencies in charge of preparations, the presidents of both the Polish and Ukrainian football associations, the directors of the Local Organising Committees and members of the UEFA Executive Committee, led by UEFA President Michel Platini, met today at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.

This last meeting of the EURO Steering Group was the occasion to review the status of preparations, 39 days prior to the opening match of the UEFA European Football Championship to be played in Warsaw on 8 June 2012. The progress made was noted and in particular the readiness of all key facilities, including stadiums and airports was underlined.

The security situation around the tournament, and in particular in Ukraine following the recent events in Dnipropetrovsk, was thoroughly reviewed and UEFA received a clear assurance by the governments of the host countries that all necessary steps are being taken to guarantee the safety of all visitors, from fans to participating players.

UEFA alerted the Ukrainian delegation about the concerns raised by the political situation in Ukraine among European politicians and media.

Even though UEFA, as a sports organisation, never interferes in political matters, UEFA has asked the Ukrainian delegation to convey these concerns to the competent authorities.
