What is the best Champions League goal?

The UEFA Champions League returns this week following a fortnight of fantastic goals – but which strike stands out as the best in the history of Europe's premier club competition?

Last week, Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimović set tongues wagging across Europe  with a stunning goal against England, lobbing goalkeeper Joe Hart from 30 metres with a jaw-dropping overhead kick. The week before, Taison treated the UEFA Europa League to a similarly spectacular strike, his outrageous Marco van Basten-esque volley helping FC Metalist Kharkiv to win 3-1 against Rosenborg BK.

In his first season, Oscar has already scored a couple of contenders

A stage for the continent's finest players, the UEFA Champions League has been no stranger to such magnificent moments over the last 20 years – from Jean-Pierre Papin's crashing volley for AC Milan against FC Porto in the inaugural tournament, to Chelsea FC midfielder Oscar's long-range effort over a stranded FC Shakhtar Donetsk keeper on matchday four earlier this month. But which goal do you think is the best in the competition's history?

Would it be one of the superb strikes that helped win a final? Zinédine Zidane's arrowing, left-footed volley for Real Madrid CF against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2002 leaps immediately to mind, as does Dejan Savićević's tackle and impeccable lob in Milan's famous 4-0 beating of FC Barcelona in 1994.

Perhaps you favour a goal that propelled a team into a showpiece? For Liverpool FC's 'Miracle of Istanbul' to occur, the Reds required Steven Gerrard's thumping half-volley late on against Olympiacos FC to rescue them in the 2004/05 group stage, while Cristiano Ronaldo's rocket helped eventual winners Manchester United FC to oust FC Porto in the 2008/09 quarter-finals.

Some brilliant goals may not have resulted in victories, but nevertheless featured in unforgettable contests. Mauro Bressan's acrobatic effort from distance opened the scoring in ACF Fiorentina's 3-3 draw with Barcelona back in the 1999/00 group stage, while Ronaldinho's shimmy and impudent toe-poke stood out in the Blaugrana's 5-4 aggregate defeat by Chelsea in 2004/05.

Alternatively, you may have been tantalised by teamwork – like Andy Cole's exchange with Dwight Yorke to bamboozle the Barça back line in the 1998/99 group stage – or inspired by individual genius. Was Mancini's furious series of stepovers and blast beyond Olympique Lyonnais' Grégory Coupet in 2006/07 better than Charles-Édouard Coridon's unorthodox diving heel-flick against Porto two seasons earlier?

Which goal is your favourite? What have we forgotten? Have your say at the bottom of the page.
